Practising certificate renewals extended

We have decided to extend the practising certificate renewal window until 20 November.

This year we are running renewals on a new IT system and with new telephony, which has been particularly challenging against the backdrop of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on us as well as on the profession. Although renewal has been straightforward for most applicants, there have been teething problems which have hampered some firms at a time when they are already managing a range of other pressures. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

The extension will give the profession longer to complete the process at what is a difficult time for everyone.

We are writing to those who have not yet started their renewal application to let them know about the extension and to assist anyone who has experienced problems. Our helplines are fully available to speak to applicants who are having problems.

22 OCTOBER 2020 - UPDATE FROM THE LAW SOCIETY PRESIDENT: “We continue to pursue this issue. I now have assurance that the SRA will agree extensions for those affected. We are promised updates tomorrow"

22 OCTOBER 2020

We have been made aware that a number of you may be experiencing problems when trying to renew practising certificates via the SRA’s website. You are not alone and we and TLS are aware of the issue. This is the latest from the TLS President:

“Thank you to those highlighting this issue. I took up this issue with the SRA. I understand the SRA has new software and there are glitches in it. They are seeking to sort those out. I am told that 90% of applications are going through which doesn't help the 10%. I am told that the SRA is contacting those with problems. I am pressing this issue.”

We will update as and when we have further information.
